Ian Waugh who freelanced for DevonAir Radio between 1980 until 1987.
This is an historic illustration and a look-back at the
company as a functioning ILR contractor.
"devonairradio.com is intended to be an objective history of a unique local radio service for a largely rural district of the UK. This work covers the period before the station won the franchise and went on air, through its contract as a broadcaster until the end of transmissions and up to date as DevonAir Radio Limited still continues to be an 'active company'.
There are many people who remember DevonAir Radio both in and out of the UK broadcast industry as a strong and largely successful local radio brand. The company was unique in so many ways not least for being the world's first twinned radio service. We had the technical capability to provide separate programmes to different areas within the DevonAir transmission network as well as 'split' commercial advertising at anytime - in 1980 when we came on air, this was revolutionary. We also set a high standard in local news, programming and presentation terms which immediately became a hallmark by which other stations tried to follow.
My role at DevonAir was of no great consequence, but the memories still loom large! Our function throughout DevonAir's history was to paint a picture in sound of our exceptional listening area. In many ways all of us who worked for DevonAir were part of a unique and loyal team.
Throughout its life DevonAir Radio was part of the soundtrack of east and south Devon. Its good to know that the picture we painted for our listeners is still etched on the minds of so many in Devon to this very day - if nothing else at least we achieved that.
This work relies heavily on contributions from former station employees and those who were, in one way or another, connected with DevonAir Radio. If you have anything you would like to add to this work, please contact me here.
I would like to thank the growing number of people who very kindly continue to offer to help me with this work (acknowledgements and thanks here)".
