Memories of Lucy
There’s a little story behind this record. I met Marc Almond in the early 80′s when he was the other half of Soft Cell and interviewed Gene Pitney for radio in the mid 80′s.
I used to frequent a small bar on the front at Gzira (Malta) opposite the bridge to Manoel Island. At the time this record was in the UK charts and I used to play it to death!
The bar was run by a very delightful elderly lady called Lucy who used to tell amazing stories of her times when she ran a ‘showbar’.
Myself and a fellow broadcaster, now a Facebook friend of mine spent many hours there drinking and listening to Lucys stories!
The late Todd Ragsdale Scudder was another friend of mine at the time. He was from Virginia (USA) and was supposed to be a student in Malta – he and I also to hang around in ‘Lucys’ (and countless other establishments!).
Gene Pitney was a perfect gentleman and so easy to interview, I was sad to learn of his death in 2006. Todd was in his 20′s, was a good friend, at times over the top, famously wild but with a good heart – he passed away aged 31, July 20th 2001.
This record always reminds me of friends and those days which were so really happy.
